Distance learning

open-uni-logoDistance learning is a flexible approach to gaining qualifications; this is how The Open University works in their own words…

As an Open University student, you’ll need to apply yourself and put in the time and effort. But it will prove to be an unforgettable learning experience. You’ll need to be self-motivated as university study is different from teaching in schools. We’re not a campus-based university but that doesn’t mean to say that the qualifications are less valuable, the work less rigorous, the study materials and resources of lower quality or the fun reduced. In fact, in most cases the opposite is true. You’ll meet some great people, build up your skills and knowledge, and thoroughly enjoy yourself in the process.

What will it be like?

The Open University’s unique, world-leading study approach is called supported Open Learning. This uses a blend of innovative course materials and top-class teaching methods to provide an exceptional learning experience.

Support for you

You’ll enjoy support throughout your studies with a tutor or adviser to guide, advise and offer comprehensive feedback on coursework. Your tutor or adviser can be contacted by phone or online, and will organise group tutorials and seminars. Support is also offered by other Open University staff and fellow students at tutorials, or as part of the global community of Open University students who can be reached through online forums.

Course materials and teaching methods

Our interactive teaching, multimedia materials and workbooks bring a new dimension to learning. The materials are yours to keep and to refer to whenever you wish. The materials we provide are of the highest internationally renowned quality, and can include:

  • specially written textbooks or workbooks
  • online teaching materials
  • CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and computer software
  • audio and visual recordings
  • equipment loaned for practical work – particularly for science and technology courses.

elearning and computers

Using computers and the internet to enhance your study is an essential part of our study method. You’ll need regular and reliable access to the internet and a computer, so that you can take full advantage of our online services, including online forums and our vast library, and get access to support from your tutor and fellow students. All our courses have a course website that will help you to plan and organise your study and allow you to get involved with The Open University’s learning community – the largest in the world!

Assignments and assessment

You’ll be asked to submit pieces of work that will contribute towards the completion of your course and/or qualification. The number and nature of the assignments will vary from course to course. Some assignments are marked by your tutor, or multiple choice questions marked by a computer. There may also be project work, practical work or experiments to complete.

Residential schools

Some of our courses include a day school or residential school, which you can attend in person or take part in an online equivalent. Most students say that this is one of the highlights of their learning experience. Residential schools are often held over a week at a campus university during the summer, or maybe over a long weekend – depending on which course you study. They offer a great opportunity for you to discuss your course and crystallise your learning.
