Project: Great White Shark conservation
Country: South Africa
Duration: 2 weeks+
Brand: Greenforce (a specialist division of Gapforce)
Overview
South Africa was the first country to protect Great White Sharks. Due to a combination of myth and incorrect films plus dramatic media coverage many see the Great White as a killer that needs to be removed from the oceans.
This project is designed to separate fiction from fact by increasing our knowledge of these amazing creatures. This opportunity is one of a life time and a great way to work in an environment that works closely with these wonderful and unique creatures
Highlights
• Go cage diving and get up close to the Great Whites
• Re-educate tourists and their knowledge regarding the Great White sharks to help bust the myths around this supposedly “deadly killer”
• Learn about shark biology
• Help with underwater filming of the sharks
• Explore wonderful Cape Town
What I will achieve:
This is a fantastic opportunity to do something really unique that you’ll remember forever. It’s also a great way to enhance your CV.
• You will achieve a greater understanding for the Great White and how they have been so miss-understood all these years.
• You’ll be given training in White Shark biology, research their behaviour and breeding habits. How their attitudes change depending on circumstance and environment.
• You will also learn about shark attacks and basic seamanship (includes anchoring positions and wind directions), underwater filming, still photography and shark tourism.
What will I be doing:
Weather permitting you will go to sea frequently. At sea, you’ll get involved as much as possible with all aspects of sea work. This will be focused on working with the sharks from above and below the water. Much emphasis will be placed on observing behaviour and the interactions of sharks around the boat. You will be taught how to get in and out of the cage and how to remain secure and safe in the cage. Participants in the cages will record observations of the White Sharks. This will include sex, size, markings and behaviour.
This training is designed to educate you to a level of competence of a field assistant. During the training, you will be evaluated on how you handle teamwork, take your own initiatives, take interest in the work and activities, show interest in learning.
